In 1984, it was upgraded to a full-fledged university and named in honor of Edward Sokoine, the former Prime Minister of Tanzania, who was known for his dedication to agricultural development.
SUA offers a wide range of academic programs in agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine, food science, agribusiness, natural resources management, environmental sciences, and education. The institution is recognized for its strong emphasis on research and innovation, with the goal of addressing challenges in food security, rural development, and sustainable natural resource use. It collaborates with both national and international organizations to advance scientific knowledge and provide solutions that benefit farmers and communities.
Beyond academics, SUA is also involved in outreach and extension services, providing training and support to farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Through its teaching, research, and community engagement, the university plays a crucial role in supporting Tanzania’s agricultural sector and overall economic growth.
